It’s the world’s most popular drink, next to water—and it’s steeped in health benefits. 
Next to water tea is the most popular drink in the world and steeped in health benefits. Loose tea may also contain more antioxidants than tea in bags, because the leaves are less processed.

Real teas are made from the Camellia sinensis plant.

Black Tea

  • the most common variety
  • slightly bitter flavor
  • about 40 mg caffeine per cup (coffee has 50 - 100 mg per cup)
Health Benefits:
  • high concentration of antioxidant compounds
  • linked to lower levels of cholesterol
  • may cut risk of stroke

Green Tea


  • more delicate flavor than black tea
  • less caffeine than black tea
  • about 25 mg caffeine per cup

Health Benefits:

  • full of antioxidants
  • may lower risk of cardiovascular disease


Oolong Tea


  • similar to black tea
  • richer taste
  • about 30 mg caffeine per cup

Health Benefits:

  • may aid in weight loss
                         

White Tea

  • leaves are picked when very young
  • milder flavor
  • about 15 mg caffeine per cup
Health Benefits:

  • health multitasker
  • offers same cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits as other teas
  • some research suggests it may offer benefits to people with diabetes
  • animal studies show improved glucose tolerance and reduction in cholesterol

Flavored Tea

  • aromas are added to tea leaves, such as cinnamon, orange peel, lavender
Health Benefits:

  • same levels of antioxidants 
  • same levels of health benefits 
  • flavored with superfruits, such as blueberries, may contain even more antioxidants
  • stay away from sweetened varieties in bottles
  • flavored tea drinks are often watered down

Herbal Tea


  • technically these are not teas
  • usually contain a combination of fruits, flowers, and herbs
  • avoid herbal weight-loss teas, may contain laxatives

Health Benefits:

  • less research
  • one study suggests drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily may help lower blood pressure
  • evidence suggests chamomile tea may promote sleep
  • peppermint tea may calm the stomach
