Just a couple of paragraphs:
Warming foods in alternative healingTwo of the oldest forms of natural medicine, Ayurveda from India and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), embrace the notion that foods can affect our body temperature and thusly our overall health throughout the seasons. To that end, practitioners often change their diets with the seasons or with the temperature-needs of their bodies. In Ayurveda a concept of interconnectedness is central along with the idea of life forces and energies. In the winter months, the dosha (life force) known as Vata is dominant. Eating appropriately for this dosha and the time of the year ensures our bodies are kept in balance and simultaneously warm. Warm and cooked foods including soups, hot cereals and hearty beverages are encouraged to keep Vata in balance, as is eating three full meals each day on a regular schedule.Maharishi Ayurveda suggests favoring sweet, sour and salty tastes over bitter, pungent and astringent foods this time of year. Cooked vegetables are valued over raw ones during this time of year and sweet, heavy fruits like bananas, avocados, peaches and mangoes are encouraged. They also recommend adding spices like cardamom, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, salt, cloves and black pepper to further balance Vata.In Traditional Chinese Medicine, foods likely to keep you warm and sustained throughout the winter and polar vortex are referred to as “heaty” foods. Heaty foods are those that will build your body up and create hot or yang energy. (Cooling foods, on the other hand, produce yin energy).Examples of heaty foods include: chili peppers, red dates, onions, garlic, beef, honey, beets, sweet potatoes and several that are also included in the Ayurvedic list like mango, ginseng and ginger. According to TCM, these foods can increase circulation, energy levels and help battle a chill.
